he led a key attack on harpers ferry hoping to start a slave rebellion
The raid on Harper's Ferry started on the night of October 16,1859.
Radical antislavery abolitionist, John Brown, believed he could start a slave revolt against slave owners. He and his friends decided to capture the Federal Armory at Harper's Ferry, VA. and use the weapons to distribute to slaves so they could stage a revolt under Brown's leadership. The plan after capturing the arms depot was to send his friends out in the fields & recruit slaves into a rebellion.
The plan to begin a slave rebellion was flawed in that the center of the rebellion, Harpers Ferry, was located in the northwest part of Virginia. There were few slaves in that area of Virginia, and John Brown's group of ardent abolitionists only carried with them one day's rations. In addition, he left at his Maryland farm an extensive paper trail of his plans and where he was headed.
Because John Brown was outnumbered and he should have had a lot more people to start with. Few black or white Americans were prepared to join a rebellion led by a fanatical abolitionist.
