A special mention would be Agustin de Iturbide, who at first was supreme commander of the Spanish colonial forces and later switched sides, thus helping the Insurgents winning the war of independence.
It was being administered, as a colony, by the Spanish. However, the War of Independence had gotten underway in 1810, upon the instigation of Father Hidalgo and his forces. It was not until 1821 that Mexico achieved independence from Spain.
On August 19, 1821 in the town of Azcapotzalco, now part of Mexico City, insurgent forces fought hand-to-hand against the royalist Spanish forces in the Convent of the Dominicos. It was the last battle of the War of Mexican Independence which began with the Grito de Dolores in 1810.
