Fr. Georgii Gapon, led the demonstrators on the day that would be called Bloody Sunday in 1905. Ironically, Fr. Gapon was murdered in 1906 by the Social Revolutionaries, a militant socialist revolutionary political party, for being a suspected police agent for the Tsarist regime.
A priest, Father George Gapon, led a peaceful demonstration of unarmed workers and their families, trying to give a petition to the Tsar for better working conditions, food, and pay. Father Gapon had previously spoken with officials about the demonstration, so they were well aware it was going to occur. However, when the crowd approached the Winter Palace, singing religious songs and carrying pictures of the Tsar, to honor him, the palace guards fired into the crowd of men, women and children, killing many. Father Gapon was later killed as well.
When the Tsar was told about it, he asked the head of the palace guard, "Are you sure you've killed enough of them?" The day became known as "Bloody Sunday" and Tsar Nicholas II was called "the murderer" by the workers and peasants.
