After the Persians destroyed the walls and temples in 480 BCE, they were rebuilt and extended over a period of 50 years under various leaderships. A major effort was made during the administration of Pericles from 447 BCE, using funds diverted from the anti-Persian Delian League's war contributions.

The Athenians fully determined to rebuild the walls the Persians had pulled down in order to ensure their ability to remain independent. They sent Themistocles to pretend to negotiate with the Spartans to keep them from observing the rebuilding, and when the Spartans found out, it was too late to do anything about it..

It rebuilt the city after the Persian invasion was repelled in 479 BCE. This included walls not only around the city but also down to its port, which enabled it to bothe import food during seiges and to send out its fleet to attack invaders' home cities.

The Persian War ended 30 years later, and was replaced by the Peloponnesian War with other Greek cities. After the Athenian fleet was destroyed, it was beseiged, and unable to import food, capitulated.
