Dr Robert Duane Ballard, born on 30 June 1942, was educated as a marine geologist and geophysicist. He joined the Navy in 1967, working on undersea projects which included undersea mapping. Using sonar, Ballard located the Titanic about 3,600 metres deep in the North Atlantic Ocean on 1 September 1985.

It was discovered, and confirmed Ballard's assumptions, that the Titanic did split in two. The bow stayed relatively in shape. However the stern was collapsed, most likely when it impacted the sea floor at high speed. An implosion had taken place as she was sinking, which led to a large debris field at the wreck site.
