The person who lived in Warwick Castle at first was William the Conqueror. (He was the one who built the castle in 1068). In the early 17th century, sir Fluke Greville converted the castle from fortification to a county hill. it was owned by the Greville family who lived there from 1759 to 1978.

Contrary to popular belief, castles were not built for anyone to live in. They often included accommodation for a nobleman or for the king - but only on a temporary basis, since the main functions of a castle were for administration of the surrounding area and for military defence in time of war.

Castles were cold, uncomfortable, draughty places where nobody would want to live for very long; we have records of knights and serjantz performing their obligatory castle garrison duty who hated every minute and were ecstatic when their 40 days were up.

York castle was never converted into a stately home as some other medieval castles were. Instead it served as a prison until it fell into disrepair.
