The United Nations Education Scientific and Cultural Organization, otherwise known as UNESCO, is looking after the world's heritage sites since the foundation of the United Nations in 1945.

However, the ownership of the site, and therefore responsibility for infrastructure, maintenance and access, remains with the nation where the site is located.

World Heritage Sites are managed by UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. UNESCO was established as a specialized agency on 16 November, 1945. UNESCO's head is in Paris, France.

They are usually controlled, kept, restored and protected by the countries in which they happen to fall in. These countries have the responsibility of keeping them safe and they also have the right to make money through tourism in visits to this sites but as long as they are not damaged.

World Heritage sites are owned by the nation/territory where they are located. They are declared WHS by the United Nations and the host countries agree to not disturb and preserve the sites with a charter.
