The Badlands became a national park to preserve the wilderness. The largest undisturbed mixed grass prairie in the United States is located in the Badlands. The Oglala Lakota Nation, the second-largest American Indian Reservation in the United States, co-manages half of Badlands National Park.
Badlands National Park is located in the White River Badlands and was called mako sica (mako, land and sica, bad) by the Sioux Indians. The term badlands generally refers to an area that is difficult to travel through primarily because of the rugged terrain and lack of water. The fascinating landscape within the park erodes at a rate of about 1 inch per year, providing an ever-changing landscape.
South Dakota U.S. Senator Peter Norbeck and local homesteader Ben Millard worked to get the area approved as a national monument beginning in the 1920's. The Badlands National Monument was authorized on March 4, 1929 and founded as a national monument by official proclamation from President Franklin Roosevelt on January 25, 1939. It became Badlands National Park by an act of Congress on November 10, 1978.
It wasn't made, it was discovered in the South Dakota near the Black Hills and it is one of the most rugged areas. It was set aside to preserve the landscape.
