Initially, followers of Christ met in one anothers homes. Sometimes they met in a safe outdoor or below ground place. It wasn't until the 4th Century when 'Christianity' was fully accepted that people began to built structures called churches to met in.
Metaphorically, Jesus is said to be the 'cornerstone' or foundational stone upon which His Church is built.
