Although James Cook did not discover New Zealand or Australia, he was the first to explore and map both. He circumnavigated New Zealand's islands in 1769 and much of the eastern coast of Australia in 1770.
Sea explorer Matthew Flinders is generally credited with mapping the coastline of Australia. Between December 1801 and June 1803, Flinders circumnavigatec and charted the entire coastline of Australia. During this time, he filled in some of the information Captain Cook had missed in 1770. Flinders is the one most credited with mapping all of Australia, as he was the first to circumnavigate the continent.
