The redcells of the Baby enters the blood stream of the mom. The baby has Rh anitgen on its cells. The mom does not. The +Rh anitgen attaches to the moms redcells which does not have the antigen. Then the mom starts forming antibodies AGAINST the babies red cellsThe antibodies attach to the baby's redcells and this is Hemolytic disease of the newborn. The bilirubin goes extrememly high and causes brain damage sometimes a total body blood exchange will not help. This is why that the Rh = mother needs prenatal care in order to receive the Rhogam injection before birth (for the baby) and after birth (for future babies).
