Muslims argue that the "Rightly-Guided Caliphs" were motivated purely for ideological and religious reasons for holding power, as opposed to reasons related to economic power, prestige, and corruption, a theme that was prevalent in the later Umayyad, Abbassid, and other Caliphates. They wanted to preserve and advance the religion that Muhammad had revealed in the Qur'an.

As for what actually may have guided them, it is anyone's guess. All four of them were certainly believers and strongly motivated by that belief, but they were human and also responded to basal urges of power, centralization, economic growth, and personal aggrandizement.

The first Four Caliphs are Called the Rightful (Rashidoon) Caliphs. They were in order of seniority: Hazrat Abubakr who died his natural death. Hazrat Umar was assasinated in the Majid i - Nabwi when he came to lead the Fajr prayer. Hazrat Usman was assasinated by the rebels. The last caliph was killed in 128?

This depends on what you mean by the word caliph. If you are referring to the rightfully guided Caliphs, who came right after the death of the Prophet Muhammad (S), then the last one, Hasan ibn Ali (RA) died in the year 50 After Hijra. There is debate about whether he or Ali ibn Abi Talib, his father, is the last of the rightfully guided Khalifas. Ali died in 40 AH. The Caliphate, however, was never officially abolished until the year 1924 AD, or 1343 AH. The last Caliph, Abdulmecid the second of the Ottoman Empire, was forced to abolish his title upon the formation of the Republic of Turkey.
