The Black Hills of South Dakota cover a large area. Parts of the Black Hills are privately owned or owned by businesses, corporations and non-profit organizations. Other parts of the Black Hills are owned by various governmental entities.

The National Park Service, a bureau of the US Department of the Interior, is entrusted by the people of the United States with the care of the National Parks. In the Black Hills, this includes Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Jewel Cave National Monument, and Wind Cave National Park.

The US Forest Service, an agency of the US Department of Agriculture, manages public lands in national forests and grasslands, including the Black Hills National Forest.

The South Dakota Department of Game, Fish, and Parks manages and preserves the wildlife, parks, and recreation for the people of the state of South Dakota. Areas they manage in the Black Hills include the Angostura Recreation Area, Bear Butte State Park, Custer State Park, the George S. Mickelson Trail, the Rocky Point Recreation Area, and the Roughlock Falls Nature Area.
