They paid their own way. The Polo's (Marco and his uncles) were traders. They did not themselves see their travels as an 'expedition', but merely as business trips to trade, buy and barter with Middle East and Asian traders.
Many historians now believe that Marco Polo never actually went to China himself (Chinese records nowhere mention him, while he claims to have been quite an important figure and confidant at the Court of the Khan) but that on his travels to today's Middle East he had listened closely to the many stories he heard from other traders - European and Asian - who had been there and bundled those stories as his own adventures.
