Tenochtitlan and the Aztecs are not the exact same thing. Tenochtitlan was the capital city of the Aztec empire. The Aztecs built the city of Tenochtitlan in the location where Mexico City is currently located.
After conquering the Aztecs, Cortes renamed the city of Tenochtitlan to Mexico City.
Rivera painted a mural for the Rockefeller Center, in New York in 1933. The artist was asked to depict mankind striding towards a "new and better future". Rivera decided to incorporate portraits of Lenin and Trotsky into the work, which, did not sit well with his employers. The commission was cancelled and the unfinished mural taken down. In 1934, he re-painted the mural for the Palace of Fine Arts in Mexico City. This version was entitled Man, Controller of the Universe
Present-day Mexico city is located atop the ruins of ancient Tenochtitlan.
