One major one was the fact that the lead actress Sarah Michelle Geller publicly announced that she wanted 'a break' from acting as Buffy, and her contract had finished at season 7. Another reason was that the shows creator Joss Weldon got overly confident. He had an ongoing argument with some of the major TV producers, and so when the contract between Buffy and the Channel that it ran with ran out after 7 years, he left it too late to update.
