Born Marion Michael Morrison, and then later as a young boy with the nickname Duke*, John Wayne's name was changed by a director. He felt that Marion wasn't manly enough for Wayne's appearant he-man image. *His nickname Duke had been credited to the Hollywood image maker but the name was given to him as a boy. At the time he had a dog named Duke, so the locals refered to the dog as Big Duke and the young Marion as Little Duke.
