The original Godzilla was played by the Japanese stunt man/actor Haruo Nakajima.
In 1953 Nakajima played an airplane pilot who had crashed his plane. The part called for him to be set on fire ... something never done before in a Japanese movie. The film was directed by Ishiro Honda, who also directed Godzilla (Gojira).
Nakajima was the only actor brave enough to volunteer for the stunt.
The next year, when Honda was looking for someone to stuff into the 200 pound rubber Godzilla costume he remembered Nakajima stating, "Hey, let's get that guy we set on fire last year."
The rest is history.
Haruo Nakajima played the monster from 1954 to 1975.
