Henry VIII was the second son of King Henry VII. The oldest son, Arthur, died before his father, leaving Henry next in line for the throne.
No he was second in line, first in line was Arthur Tudor but he died on the 2nd April 1502 meaning Henry was Henry VII heir to the throne.

The second child of King Henry VIII was Elizabeth I by Henry's second wife Anne Boleyn. After King Henry died in 1547 his son Edward VI by Henry's third wife Jane Seymour came into the throne. Edward at the age of 15 in 1553. After Edward's death Mary, the first child of King Henry by first wife Catherine of Aragon, ruled until 1558. After Mary's death Elizabeth superseded the throne and ruled until her death in 1603.
Henry was duke of york when he was a young boy, because he was second in line to the throne. Traditionally the first in line to the throne is named the prince of wales, and the second is the duke of york.
