Jesus is proclaimed as the only son of God throughout the New Testament. For those who believe that Scripture is the inerrant word of God, this means that God the Father (the first person of the Trinity) proclaimed him thus. The most famous reference is John 3:16 "God so love the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life." There are other instances in the Gospels where God declares Jesus to be his son.
