The incumbent Vice-president Richard M. Johnson was unpopular in the South because he had taken a slave as a common-law wife and treated their children as if they were white. The Democratic Convention therefore did not nominate anyone to run for vice-president, although Johnson would no doubt have been elected vice-president if Van Buren would have won the election,
