In 1836 the Whigs ran two candidates against him, Wm Henry Harrison in the North and Hugh L White of Tennessee in the South. Additionally, the Whigs in Massachusetts nominated Daniel Webster, while SC ignored all of them and cast its electoral vore for Willie P Mangum. Their hope was to divide the vote so that no one would get a majority and the House would decide the election.
