In the 1860 Presidential Election, Abraham Lincoln beat Stephen A. Douglas (Democrat), John C. Breckinridge (Southern Democrat) and John Bell (Constitutional Union Party). He was the first Republican president. Because the Democratic party was split, they lost the election. Also, as a result of this split and other factors, Lincoln received 31% of the votes in 1860.
