The fragrance "Jungle Gardenia" from the 70's was from Coty who bought out the original manufacturer Tuvache in the late 60's. Tuvache used to be the main sponsor on Bob Barker's original tv show "Truth or Consequences" and everyone who won his quiz section went home with at least a years supply of the stuff. After the buy out Coty remixed the original Tuvache formula to make it less expensive to manufacture and they killed it completely. It was very toned down and lost all of the original overpoweringly heavy scent of the original which cost them lots of sales. I have heard that Elizabeth Taylor was a huge fan of the original scent and that the fragrance line bearing her name now markets a scent called "Gardenia" that is said to be a dead ringer for the Tuvache one.
Oddly, the Tuvache fragrance was marketed almost exclusively thru drug stores, was really very inexpensive but was actually considered to be a classy product in its day. The image of Liz pulling up to her local Rexall's and buying a gallon of the stuff is kind of frightening.
A neighbor of my grandmothers used to wear the Tuvache fragrance and I swear you could smell it from across the street. It was like someone dropped Tahiti on you!
