Matthias, a follower of Jesus along with the twelve chosen Apostles, was chosen by a drawing (lot) of the shorter stick. Peter supervised this activity. This was done in response to the Old Testament prophecy "that another shall take his (the traitors) place". However, many bible scholars feel that the man Saul, who's name was later changed to Paul, was the God-appointed Apostle to take Judas Iscariots' place. Since there were hundreds of "disciples" under Jesus' ministry, the original 12 were not considered more holy or chosen than other men--they were simply the ones that Jesus chose to Tudor and mentor during this 3 year period. They were told to "go and make disciples" too.
