Matthias, a follower of Jesus along with the twelve chosen Apostles, was chosen by a drawing (lot) of the shorter stick. Peter supervised this activity. This was done in response to the Old Testament prophecy "that another shall take his (the traitors) place". However, many bible scholars feel that the man Saul, who's name was later changed to Paul, was the God-appointed Apostle to take Judas Iscariots' place.
