Napoleon Bonaparte ruled France after Maximillian Robespierre was executed on the guillotine.

NEW RESPONDENT

After Robespierre had been arrested and executed by the National Convention on July 27, 1794 (9 Thermidor year II), France was given the Constitution of Year III, which dissolved the National Convention. A new governmental system, based on a bicameral legislature ruled by a five-member executive was established. It was called The Directory.

Louis 16th was the King of France and was executed in December 1792. However, the French Revolution had started in July 1789 with the storming of the Bastille. In the interim, the King and his family was held (in various places) as captives. During this time, various political factions held power. There was constant fighting among the parties and guilliotine was hauled out again and again to settle disputes. After a failed (and almost comical) escape attempt by the King and his family, he was put on trial and executed (again by guilliotine). At the time of his execution, the Girondists was the political faction in power. They were overthrown in the summer of 1793. Their leader was popularly thought to be Jacques Brissot (party was sometimes called the Brissotins or "Baguettes"), but during those turbulent (and very bloody times), the argument can be made that he was only the faction's propoganda minister (i.e. mouthpiece). In any event, he was executed (by, of course, guilliotine) in July 1793. The vaccuum that was created by the coup was filled by the Montagnards - who's most visible member was Robespierre. They lasted a year before they were overthrown and executed in the summer of 1794.
