Gaius Plinius Secundus and Gaius Caecilius Cilo more commonly known as Pliny the Elder and Pliny the Younger respectively were famously both witnesses to the eruption of Mt Vesuvius on the 24 August 79 AD that destroyed Pompeii and Herculenium. Pliny the Younger was also the author of the only surviving eyewitness account of the eruption in letters he wrote to the historian, Tacitus
The most recent eruption occurred in March 1944 and was witnessed by the personnel of USAAF 340th Bombardment Group stationed at Pompeii Airfield near Terzigno and presumably local residents.
