By 1600, Wales had officially been amalgamated into England as a result of the Act of Union signed by Henry VIII in 1536. It was thus considered a part of England rather than a nation in it's own right, so was ruled by the English crown- first Elizabeth I (herself one quarter Welsh), then James I, Charles I, Oliver Cromwell's Commonwealth, Charles II, James II and William of Orange.
