Portugal is ruled by a democratic parlamentary government formed by a President of the Republic with veto power and a parlament with little over 200 seats disputed by roughly 6 parties. The legislative power is in the hand of the prime minister, elected in 2005 by absolute majority.

The current government is Socialist and will face election in 2009, with prospects of re-election.
