phantom of the opera
The phantom of the opera, Erik, was born horrifyingly deformed. His parents hated him. He ran away as a young child. He was shown in a freak show. He was known as a joke in the opera house. He was escaping murder most of his life. The one woman he fell in love with turned to pity him. He lived a rather harsh life.
There are multiple versions of the Phantom of the Opera story. In the novel by Gaston Leroux (and a few movies) the Phantom dies.In the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, the Phantom leaves for Madame Giry's apartment. He then goes to Coney Island in America as a freak show. He advances quickly up the social ladder, and soon becomes the grand designer of Coney Island. By the time ten years has passed, he decides he needs to see Christine a gain. He invites her to have a concert at the opera house in New York. The events that follow can be found in the novel The Phantom of Manhattan or Andrew Lloyd Webber's soon-to-be released musical Phantom: Love Never Dies.

For many years, the Phantom of the Opera, which opened in 1983, was the highest grossing Broadway show. More recently, in 2012, the Lion King surpassed the Phantom of the Opera to become the highest grossing Broadway. The Lion King opened in 1997, and although not open as long as The Phantom of the Opera, the ticket prices are higher, resulting in more box office receipts.
