The premiere was on February 14, 1972, though he wasn't part of the original cast. He was an understudy at first. He played many many characters, including Dany Zuko (during the mid-1970s) and Kenickie and was the male lead during the 1000th performance. He stayed at least until december 2, 1979 (after Grease), when the show passed "Fiddler on a Roof" as Broadway's longest running show. The show was now at its3243rd performance. By the time it closed on April 13, 1980, it had run 3,388 performances. I'm guessing he stayed because it was not much long after december 1979 !
