At the fall of France in 1940 it was a good bet that Britain was next on the list to be invaded: Britain stood alone against the Nazi threat. It throws light on why the British fired on the French fleet at Oran & elsewhere. Churchill speeches make this plain: How true: If the British Empire & its Commonwealth should last for a thousand years men will still say this was their finest hour.....
The phrase "finest hour" come from a speech in Parliament by Sir Winston Churchill, shortly after the beginning of World War 2, and so was not, at the time, related to The Battle of Britain. "But if we fail, then the whole world, including the United States, including all that we have known and cared for, will sink into the abyss of a new dark age made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted, by the lights of perverted science. Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves, that if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, This was their finest hour."
Cetshwayo KaMpande was the Chief of the Zulus. He was famous for being a great tactician in battle and a greatly loved but feared leader. He won a battle in 1879 which almost marked the end of the British Empire and his Impi killed 1500 of Britain's finest sharpshooters in the Battle of Isandlwana and the British leader of this battle was disgraced.
He represented the finest traits of the British Bulldog.
People in the British Isles share a common language, a common heritage, and some of the finest literature and plays in the world.

The homophone for "finest" is "finest." This word does not have a different homophone as it is spelled and pronounced the same way.

London's finest what?
The Empire remained on Britain's side. Lots of Canadians were involved in the Battle of Britain. Australians and New Zealanders too. There were also quite a lot of pilots from Nazi occupied countries. Loads of Poles and Czechs. There were even several people from the neutral US and Ireland serving in the RAF. Be that as it may, the British Empire stood alone against the Nazis during the Battle of Britain. It as their "Finest Hour."
In the Battle of Britain, the Empire stood up, alone, against the might of Nazi Germany after it had demolished Poland, Holland, Denmark, Belgium, France, and Norway. Churchill said, "Even if the Empire should last for a thousand years, men will look back on this and say, 'This was their Finest Hour.'" Some critics thought he should have sued for peace, instead.
Finest Hour was created in 1989.
