Nobody like taxes. Everyone would like to avoid taxes and added to individuals tax burdens. That said, taxes are part of what we pay to live in civilized society. Taxes provide services that the citizen's demand or that the nation requires. Taxes are the revenue portion of the budget and as such must be levied fairly to provide for the services demanded. Not raising taxes when costs rise and after everything that can be done is done to lower the budget is irresponsible. The only alternative is borrowing. Borrowing is costly when used to pay for current on-going expenses. (Borrowing for capital and long term infrastructure is not expensive.) Today, after years of anti-tax drum beating, the Republican Party has been co-opted into being against any new taxes (and basically against all taxes.) This has not always been the case. Democrats continue to believe that to govern responsibly it is necessary to faithfully consider the revenue side of the budget which constitutionally is squarely in the authority of Congress.
