Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, "Father?" "Yes, my son?" Abraham replied. And the two of them went on together. Genesis 22.7,8

What is the name of the angel who stopped Abraham from sacrificing Isaac?

It was not an angel for it was God himself who stopped Abraham from sacrificing his son. Then God said, "Take your son, your only son, whom you love-Isaac-and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you." Early the next morning Abraham got up and loaded his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about. On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. He said to his servants, "Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you." Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together, Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, "Father?" "Yes, my son?" Abraham replied. "The fire and wood are here," Isaac said, "but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?" Abraham answered, "God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son." And the two of them went on together. When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. But the angel of the Lord called out to him from heaven, "Abraham! Abraham!" "Here I am," he replied. "Do not lay a hand on the boy," he said. "Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son." Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide. And to this day it is said, "On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided."Genesis 22:1-13

What is the biblical symbolism of the lamb?

The meat of lambs was considered a delicacy among the ancient Hebrews and the killing of a lamb would mark important occasions. From the earliest times a lamb was used for sacrifices. c.p Genesis 4:4, 22:7 A lamb was the primary offering in the Mosaic sacrificial system. It was offered on 8 or 9 occasions. For example, the continual burnt offering which was offered each morning and evening, also a lamb was offered on the first day of each month. The lamb symbolised innocence and purity. One special occasion was the Passover lamb. Israel was delivered from God's judgement on Egypt through the sacrifice of the Passover lamb. Probably the Passover lamb was what John the Baptist had in mind when he called Jesus the Lamb of God. John 1:29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! This is what Christians believe, Jesus came as the lamb of God, innocent, but died as a suitable sacrifice for all sin.

Why did Abraham use a ram instead of a lamb to sacrifice at Mount Moriah?

Abraham used a ram as a substitute for sacrificing his son Isaac because he demonstrated his willingness to obey God without actually having to sacrifice his son. This event is seen as a test of Abraham's faith and obedience. The ram provided by God symbolized that there was no need for human sacrifice in worshiping God.

Did God as He said provide a lamb for the sacrifice?

Yes, he sure did. This is the question that Issac asked his father Abraham when they were walking up the mountain where Abraham was going to offer up his son for a sacrifice - "Where is the lamb?", and his father answered, "My son, God will provide himself a lamb." (Gen.22.7,8). And God, moreover, provided himself a Lamb, pure and spotless, without blemish, the Lord Jesus Christ, his only Son, who died on the cross for our sins - As John the Baptist said: "Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world." John 1:29

What does Abraham have to do with the birth of Jesus Christ?

That Abraham ls a type of God the Father is best seen the offering up of Isaac as a sacrifice. In Genesis 22, a father [Abraham] (in verse 2) is told to sacrifice his only son, his beloved son [Isaac], and after 3 days travelling (v.3-4) [during which time the father Abraham regarded his son Isaac as good as dead] they reached Mt Moriah [2000 yrs later that particular topographical location was called Golgotha] where Isaac was about to die when a ram was substituted as a sacrificial offering instead [ our sacrificial offering is Jesus Christ]. Abraham himself said that "God will provide himself a lamb for a [sacrifice]"propheseying of Jesus Christ who took our sins upon Himself and died instead of us that we might live.Gen 22:7-8 KJV And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, " My father": and he said, "Here am I, my son". And he said, "Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?" (v.8) And Abraham said, "My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering": so they went both of them together.Gen 22:13-14 KJV And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son. (v.14) And Abraham called the name of that placeJehovahjireh: as it is said to this day,"In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen".This is prophesying of the substitutionary sacrificial death of Jesus Christ , not his birth. It has nothing to do with His birth.Gen 22:16-18 KJV And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son: (v.17) That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; (v.18) And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.

Why was lamb chosen as a sacrifice at the very first passover?

In Jewish history, an unblemished lamb, the firstborn of its mother, was sacrificed in the Temple to represent or stand as a symbol of the Lamb of God who would eventually be sacrificed for our atonement. This was part of the Law of Moses that God gave to our ancient Israelite ancestors. It was designed to remind them that the Son of God would come and atone for their sins. Unfortunately, they lost sight of that over time. However, when Jesus came, he fulfilled the law of Moses and taught that the sacrifice he wanted from then on was a broken heart and a contrite spirit. This was actually what God wants (and wanted) from all His children, no matter what age of time they have lived. That innocent lamb represented an innocent Savior.
