What became Utah territory was inhabited by native tribes for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. Catholic Missionaries, fur trappers, explorers, and others came and went without establishing permanent settlements. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church), seeking religious freedom, found their refuge in this land that was deemed 'uninhabitable' by many white men. While Mormons founded most of the cities and towns in Utah, many others were founded by miners, ranchers, and railroad workers from many religious backgrounds, all in search of the economic prosperity offered by the west.
