Horses don't necessarily need to be shod. If the horse has a strong hoof and doesn't wear it down faster than it can grow out then the horse would most likely be best without shoes. A barefoot horse still needs it's hooves trimmed every 4 to 8 weeks though. If however the horse needs shoes for traction or therapeutic reasons then try to go with the lightest most comfortable shoe you can find. Many people only shoe the front feet. If however you don't compete, but worry about your barefoot horse getting sore you can buy hoof boots, which are like sneakers or hiking boots for horses to use when you ride out.

Horses do not need shoes. They can have them but they are not needed. If a horses hooves are not good (cracking, chiping, etc) or if a horse has "tender feet" then it is better to get shoes. But once you get shoes, it is more dangerous if you have two horses because if the one with shoes decides to kick, then it can cause injury to the horse. Also, it costs money to put shoes on. A farrier has to come out to put the shoes on and take them off when the horses feet grow too long for them. A horse could also throw a shoe, meaning it comes off by itself, then it has the risk of stepping on it later and puncturing the sole of the horses feet. But it all depends on the horse. Have a farrier come out and determine whether a horse should have syhoes or not.

No, absolutely not and it is better that they don't. With a good diet and good hoof care and just good, natural care in general they will be fine with nothing on their feet in most situations. Horses are competing better without shoes, are living longer due to increased circulation without shoes, and healthier because shoes are not reducing shock absorbtion. In the few cases that your horse does need something protecting his feet, like for really long endurance rides over rough terrain or riding on roads (which some horses still don't need protection for that) hoof boots are a better way to go because unlike horseshoes they allow the hoof to expand with each step allowing good circulation and shock absorbtion.

No they don't but if your going to ride them you probably should get shoes.
