The Payneâ??Aldrich Tariff Act of 1909 was an act that raised certain tariffs on goods that entered the United States. It was the first act in regards to tariffs since the Dingley Act of 1897.
Passed in 1909, it was the first change in tariffs since the Dingley Act of 1897. It was initiated by New President Taft who called for a special session of Congress. Payne and Aldrich were senators and the final bill was a compromise from the original House bill. It was not what Taft wanted, but he signed it since he thought Congress should decide such matters.
One of the progressive reforms that can be attributed to the William Howard Taft administration was the Payne Aldrich Tariff Act. He also helped establish the Federal Reserve System.
