The Allied Powers, let by the United States and Russia, solved World War 2 by defeating the Axis Powers (Japan, Germany, Italy), who started the war in the 1930's.
Russia successfully held off the Germans in Eastern Europe for several years, and when the other Allies invaded Italy in 1943, Hitler stopped his Eastern Offensive, and was forced to begin retreating. The invasion of Normandy in 1944 meant the end for Germany, as they could no longer resist major advances on both sides. Those advances were led by the United States on the West, and Russia in the East. Germany surrendered in 1945.
In the Pacific Theater, the U.S. fought Japan largely alone, with some help from British and Austrailian troops. Japan fought tenanciously, leading to the death of hundreds of thousands of Americans, and even more Japanese. Japan even refused to surrender after the first atomic bomb was dropped. However, after the second one, they did surrender, in August 1945, and World War II was over.
