Lee had split his army into several divisions in the South Mountains (Maryland), and McLellan did not know their location.

However a set of Lee's orders fell into McLellan's hands, showing the proposed movements of these units. This put him in a strong position to destroy each of them in turn.

He would have been able to do this, if there hadn't been a Confederate spy in the camp, who reported the situation to Lee. So Lee had to concentrate his army in one place, and that was Antietam Creek, Sharpsburg.

The North won this battle, but did not manage to destroy Lee's Army, which was able to retreat to Virginia.

During the American Civil War, the Battle of Antietam occurred on September 17, 1862, and witnessed a bloody back-and-forth conflict between a Union army and a Confederate army in northwestern Maryland. The Confederate army was invading Northern territory; the Union army had deployed to stop it. After the day's fighting, with the larger Union army taking greater casualties while also proving more clumsy on the battlefield, both armies withdrew: the first 'Rebel' invasion of 'Yankee' territory had been stopped, if at great cost to the Union force which also missed an opportunity to deal the Confederates a decisive defeat.
