In March 1937, John Herman Thickens, the Masonite Corporation's Vice President in charge of production, came to Australia to investigate the possibility of setting-up a Masonite production plant. He looked at several possible factory sites in Tasmania and NSW, eventually selecting Raymond Terrace as the most suitable. Consequently in September 1937 the Masonite Corporation (Australia) Ltd was floated on the Stock exchange with 287,500 ordinary shares of £1. 100,000 deferred shares of 2shillings & 6pence retained by the US based Masonite Corporation in return for fully funding the Raymond Terrace factory. Production commenced in late 1938 using wood chips from local eucalypts. This was the first true hardboard plant in Australia.
