It was "confiscated" by the British in 1850 when they occupied Lahore after the death of its ruler, Ranjit Singh. The person most directly responsible for shipping it to England was Lord Dalhousie, the British Governor-General.

The first owner of the Koh-i-noor is unknown. We know that it came from Golconda in the state of Andhra Pradesh in India. It has belonged to various Mughal and Persian rulers who fought bitterly over it at various points in history and seized as a spoil of war time and again. It was finally seized by the East India Company and became part of the British Crown Jewels when British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli proclaimed Queen Victoria Empress of India in 1877.
