President Zachary Taylor was worried that the entry of California as a free state would tip the balance of slave to free states. He personally wanted California to be a free state because California had already outlawed slavery when it was owned by Mexico.
Henry Clay of Kentucky, Daniel Webster of Massachusetts, and Stephen Douglas of Illinois worked on the Compromise of 1850. Zachary Taylor opposed them but he died on July 9, 1850. Millard Fillmore became president. Without the threat of a Taylor veto, the Compromise passed and California became a state on September 9, 1850.

Mining attracted flocks of people and provided money and an economy. This led to statehood. The greatest success story is that of California, who achieved statehood from the California Gold Rush in the 1800s.
One significant factor that was not a barrier to admitting California to the Union was its population growth following the Gold Rush. The influx of settlers and prospectors in the mid-19th century created a substantial population that supported statehood. Additionally, California's economic potential and the desire for a transcontinental railroad further bolstered its admission. Ultimately, its rapid development and strategic importance outweighed any opposition, leading to its statehood in 1850.
