Populism was a movement within both political parties. Bob Lafollet was both a Republican and a populist. Using Presidential primaries to replace smoke filled rooms resulted from the populist movement. While the Democrats had more populists than did the Republicans, they did not have a monopoly. Like so many third party movements, their ideas were appropriated by the two major parties.
The goal of the populist movement was to get the government to pass pro-farmer laws instead of only benefitting industry and big business.
