As the Confederate army in Virginia was facing the overwhelming force of Union troops in Virginia, Lieutenant General Robert E. Lee was running out of troops and food for his Army of Northern Virginia. He saw little hope by continuing to wage war in Virginia. Union victories in early 1865 had placed Lee in no position to carry on the fight. In April he took US Grant's offer to surrender without the South having to suffer anymore losses. He surrendered his army to Grant at the Appomattox Court House in Virginia. The date was April 9, 1865.Confederate President Jefferson Davis wanted to continue the war. He still had a large army under General Johnston. Ultimately Johnston saw that surrendering to General Sherman was the best way to save lives and to end the war. Johnston surrendered on April 26, 1865.
