The historic Buddha taught abut suffering, its causes, end, and the way to end suffering. The Buddha never advanced a social instituion directly. The historic Buddha called his teachings Dhamma/Vinya. Two words that mean mental observations and discipline. The term "Buddhism" was never used to reffer to the Buddhas teachings until a much later date than the Buddha's life time. Through the centuries you have two groups of Buddhist teachers 1. are academic students to the Buddhas principles 2. Study those principles by living them. Modern day "Buddhism" is an interplay between these two basic teaching groups.
