Paul taught himself how to play. This task was made even harder by the fact that he was left handed and not only had to teach himself to play, but figure out he had to take the strings of and switch them to accommodate this. Never had one lesson and became an inspiration for all bass players since. Hope this helps!
He did not have formal lessons, but bandmate Paul McCartney taught him how to play.

He enjoyed go-carting in the early Beatles days.
Paul McCartney plays a Hofner 500/1 1963 bass guitar. He chose this bass as it was easy to revert it to left handed. He still plays this bass today. He started off with the Hofner as it was easy to flip over to play left handed and has gone back to playing it. For a number of years (especially after they stopped playing live) he played a Rickenbacker 4001.In the early 90s he had a custom Wal bass which was "like wearing a door".
