Artie Shaw
Clarinets are used in many different ensembles, rangng from Orchestras to swing bands. There are also clarinet choirs where all different types of clarinet play in harmony. Clarinets were also used alot in the Big Band era into the 1940s. Glann Millers Big Band found what it was looking for in the 1940s when a clarinettist joined them.

Big Band Leader....played the Clarinet.
In the band but not in the orchestra
The clarinet is helpful to the symphony orchestra because it provides a well-blending instrument that is strong in its many ranges, contrary to the oboe that has a very distinctive sound and a smaller range. The clarinet is also helpful to players that play in groups, be it symphony orchestra or band, because it is easier to learn than others. It is also a good bridge to doubling instruments, such as the Bass Clarinet or Contrabass Clarinet, allowing a director to be able to strengthen a certain section by using a clarinet player, ie A band has a strong clarinet section, but no low woodwind/brass section. The director could easily ask one of the top clarinet players to double on Bass Clarinet without worrying about the player needing too much instruction as it is very similar to the clarinet.
Artie Shaw was a renowned clarinetist and bandleader. He played the clarinet in his own band, showcasing his exceptional skill and innovative style in jazz and swing music. Shaw's band gained popularity in the 1930s and 1940s, making significant contributions to the big band era.
The ligature is the metal band on the clarinet's mouthpiece. It holds the reed in place.
As far as I know, I haven't seen a single clarinet in a jazz band (sure in a marching band, but not in jazz). My friends who play clarinet are also in the jazz band, but intead of playing their clarinets, their switch/use saxophones instead. So, no, I don't think clarinet is a jazz instrument.
A great band leader and a pioneer in music. ===================================== To expand, Benny Goodman was the most famous Clarinet player of the Swing Era, and arguably was matched in talent only by Artie Shaw. Most fans and critics agree that his orchestra effectively launched the Swing craze in 1935. I can't do his life justice in a few short words, so I'd suggest starting with his biography as published on the official Goodman website: http://www.bennygoodman.com/about/biography.html ====================================== He is also known as the King of Swing.
