A legal action can be taken against the government directly in the courts. Before the case of Peter Ng'omango v. Gerson M.K. Mwangwa and Another {High court of Tanzania at Dodoma, Civil Case no 22 of 1992 (unreported)}, anyone who wanted to take a legal action against the government had to obtain permission from the Attorney General (who is a part of the government). However, after this case the mischief of permission was held to be unconstitutional as a requirement for pursuing an action against the government. As for when they do not perform their duties, this is most commonly a result of government misconduct, which must be accounted for in order for the government to function properly. This can be accomplished by citizens realising their responsibility to know what their governments duties are, what they owe them for their tax money and to demand nothing less by taking action through the courts.
