"Short Quotations

If you are directly quoting from a work, you will need to include the author, year of publication, and the page number for the reference (preceded by "p."). Introduce the quotation with a signal phrase that includes the author's last name followed by the date of publication in parentheses.

According to Jones (1998), "Students often had difficulty using APA style, especially when it was their first time" (p. 199). Jones (1998) found "students often had difficulty using APA style" (p. 199); what implications does this have for teachers?

You would put quotation marks around it and always put it exactly as it is shown, unless you wanted to add words/letters to help it make sense in your sentence. In that case, you'd put it in square brackets... []. An example from a book jacket:

"[Marrin melts] the marble of the Washington legend into something very near flesh and blood."

After that, you'd put the first one/two/few words of the bibliographic entry and the page # in parentheses, like this:

"A modest man, Goethals gave credit to the man who made it all possible" (Marrin 181).

In the above example, Marrin is the last name of the author, so it is the first word of the bibliographic entry, and that quote came from page 181 of the book that Marrin wrote-- which in this case, is titled The Great Adventure: Theodore Roosevelt and the Rise of Modern America.
