Aaron Burr broke faith with Jefferson, and hatched various schemes with dissident Federalists. He ran for governor of New York in 1804 and enlisted Federalist support, which was blocked by Alexander Hamilton. Burr lost, and challenged Hamilton to a duel and killed him. Charged with murder, Burr fled to the West and launched possibly treasonous expedition against the United States involving invasion of Spanish territory and the turning over of territory to great Britain. He perhaps had in mind to create an independent Republic of Louisiana Republic with himself as President, though the details remain cloudy.During Burr's treason trial Chief Justice John Marshall ruled that the Court must follow very strict Constitutional criteria for conviction of treason; thus he disallowed circumstantial evidence, and Burr went free. Marshall's precedent made it difficult for later presidents to use the charge of treason to threaten opponents for political purposes.
Reportedly Aaron Burr was in contact with the British minister in Washington DC. Burr needed England in his plan to form an alliance with Great Britain to take over western territories and the land of the Louisiana Purchase. He appealed to Great Britain for military support.

The main reason why Burr is remembered is because he shot Alexander Hamilton in a duel in Weehawken. He also happened to be a Vice President, after being tied with Thomas Jefferson in the Presidential Election for which the House of Representatives had to vote on to break the tie. Although most people are familiar with the perception of Burr as a power hungry traitor, he was a Revolutionary War hero. After the death of Hamilton Burr's reputation was ruined and he resigned from his office and became involved in an alleged plot to raise an army and take over Mexico. He was tried several times, finally charged with treason by Jefferson and acquitted by chief justice John Marshall. He died in France.

The constitution stated that the house of representatives were to elect the president if there was ever to be a tie. while the federalist party put all the support behind Burr the over all win came from Alexander Hamilton using his influential role in congress to persuade the house of representatives to choose Thomas Jefferson.
In 1807, President Jefferson received a congressional request to turn over certain documents that pertained to the Aaron Burr conspiracy. Jefferson determined that he would not honor the request in that the documents he controlled were chiefly in the form of letters that he had received concerning Burr. Instead Jefferson gave the Congress a full report on the Burr affair, but would not turn over the requested documents. He explained to the Congress that his materials consisted of many rumors and conjectures. Jefferson had obtained these documents under a "restriction of private confidence".
